Almost two years ago we did a Useless Signs Route in Geel with the kids. It was great fun!
We decided to do another one on King’s Day, a Dutch national holiday. This time we chose Genk, a small town in Belgium, roughly at the same level with Maastricht on the map.
According to the website they have a 4km walking route there. With some searching and distractions we ended up covering about 5.4km. A fun and surprising walk through a place we’d never visited before. Part of the route took us past the Melberg, which looked really beautiful too! Definitely somewhere we need to come back to.

We took our time walking the route, the kids dressed up in their King’s Day orange. That sparked some fun conversations along the way. Belgians came up very warmly to congratulate us on our king — which made the kids very proud to have dressed up for the occasion, absolutely lovely!

We started at City Hall, next to the library (shown in the photo). Then the hunt for roughly 70 signs began. Fortunately it was an easy route to follow.

Another sign was hidden here too, at the steps of Sint-Martinuskerk (not the ones shown below).

Elias found this one very strange!

The boys didn’t find this one very useful either, even for the Useless Signs Route 😄

This one also provided a lot of amusement!
At the end of the route we stopped for a drink at Brasserie 360, on the same square.
